Research centres and groups

Our research is organised into nine research groups and two research centres, which reflect the diversity of interests and approaches in the department.

The Environment and Public Policy Group delivers theoretically and empirically grounded research focused on environmental issues and the energy transition. We recognise the importance of an inter-disciplinary approach to addressing global challenges and we are part of a broader group of researchers across the university, who work on these issues from perspectives of different disciplines. These include:

About the Political Theory Research Group

Public Policy and Regulation (PPR) is the home for theoretically and empirically grounded research which analyses policy and regulatory responses to important political, social and economic issues, and (individual-level) responses to these policies.

About the Public Policy and Regulation Research Group

The PPE research group studies questions spanning the disciplines of politics, philosophy, and economics, and is specifically interested in how insights from all three of these disciplines can help illuminate the study of the most pressing problems facing contemporary societies.

About the Politics, Philosophy and Economics Research Group

The Comparative Politics research group hosts a research agenda based on political institutions, representation and regimes. Most research focuses on developing economies. The research group integrate members using a variety of methodologies ranging from quantitative and quasi-experimental methods to qualitative research.

Our research has impact...

The Department of Political Economy is proud of its thriving research community. Across the board, our academics contribute to the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy's lively research environment in ways such as advising governments, serving on commissions and public bodies and supporting national and international organisations. Much of our work has a public policy angle and members of the department are regularly involved in conversations with the media and the policy-making community to communicate the policy relevance of their research.
