Dr Nicolás Marichal receives an Emerging Leadership Fellowship Award from Epilepsy Research Institute UK. The grant supports the project "Reprogramming of reactive glia into fast-spiking interneurons in a mouse model of Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy" In this project, Dr Marichal and co-investigator Professor Benedikt Berninger will investigate the possibility of regenerating inhibitory neurons from other, non-neuronal cells to reduce seizure activity in temporal lobe epilepsy, one of the most common forms of chronic epilepsy. Temporal lobe epilepsy often remains untreatable with current antiseizure medications, creating an urgent need for novel treatment strategies.

About us
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London is Europe’s largest centre for research and education in psychiatry, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021), and on this metric has risen from 16th (2014) to 4th (2021) in the world for highly cited neuroscience outputs. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). World-leading research from the IoPPN has made, and continues to make, an impact on how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness, neurological conditions, and other conditions that affect the brain.

A new landmark study, funded by us and the Medical Research Council, reveals important insights into how digital technology is being used by young people with lived experience of mental health conditions. Led by Dr Rina Dutta at King’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, the study recruited over 300 young people accessing mental health services in South-East London, to uncover comprehensive details about social media and smartphone use, and its links with self-harm. 🤳 The study found that 80% of all participants had self-harmed at least once, and that high levels of depression, anxiety, and disturbed sleep were all prevalent. 🌙 More than half reported using social media or their smartphones after midnight on a weekday. 🤝 With support from the Foundation and in partnership with YoungMinds, Dr Dutta’s study provides a basis for researchers to conduct thorough investigations in this field, helping to bring about better support for young people who are struggling with their mental health. New research from the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC), in partnership with YoungMinds, has found high levels of problematic mobile phone use, disturbed sleep, and self-harm among young people with mental health conditions. The study’s innovative design, led by Dr Rina Dutta and Dr Amanda Bye PhD AFHEA, has laid the groundwork for more thorough research into the impact of digital technology on youth mental health in the future. New research from Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre has found that DNA sequences which originate from ancient viral infections contribute to susceptibility for psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. The research was published in Nature Communications and funded by NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the National Institutes of Health. It is the first to show that a set of specific HERVs (are products of ancient viral infections) expressed in the human brain contribute to psychiatric disorder susceptibility. About eight per cent of our genome is comprised of sequences called Human Endogenous Retroviruses (HERVs), which are products of ancient viral infections that occurred hundreds of thousands of years ago. Until recently, it was assumed that these ‘fossil viruses’ were simply junk DNA, with no important function in the body. 🔬 Due to advances in genomics research, scientists have now discovered where in our DNA these fossil viruses are located, enabling us to better understand when they are expressed and what functions they may have. 🧠 A new study part-funded by our NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Maudsley BRC and led by Dr Timothy Powell and Dr Rodrigo R R Duarte has shown a link between this ancient viral DNA and psychiatric disorders. 📑 Published in Nature Portfolio Communications, this improved understanding of these ancient viruses, and the known genes implicated in psychiatric disorders, has the potential to revolutionise mental health research and lead to novel ways to treat or diagnose these conditions.
