The TU Delft Wind Energy Institute is the wind energy network of Delft University of Technology both for research and education. Its research program covers almost all aspects of modern wind energy technology, from materials, aerodynamics, and construction of turbines to offshore wind farm design and grid integration, all the way to O&M and new and future wind energy systems like for example Airborne Wind. TU Delft works together with all major wind energy research institutes in the world and has an active and growing number of partnerships with industries in and outside Europe. Students and professionals willing to specialize in this growing wind energy industry are invited to join one of TU Delft's many wind energy related programmes. It always seems impossible until it is done Hollandse Kust Noord (HKN) is delivering green electricity to Dutch society as promised. HKN is the first smart offshore wind park with its innovations. We put a lot of effort into partnering with researchers, knowledge institutes, PhDs and engineers to be at the forefront of the energy transition and innovations. With great cooperation and teamwork of the HKN One team, we were able to build our wind park in record time. And we are very proud of this achievement. This project video is a BIG THANK YOU to everyone involved. Now that construction of the wind park is completed, we are moving into a new phase with a new team and a new homebase in IJmuiden. In this phase we are managing the operational side of the wind park and continue to work on the implementation of the innovations. We were honored to host Albert Winnemuller, head of Global Offshore Product Market Strategy at Vestas, for an enlightening lunch lecture on the offshore wind energy market and Vestas' strategic positioning. 🏫 The lecture hall was buzzing with students, faculty, and industry professionals eager to gain insights from Albert's vast experience in the wind industry. A Delft University of Technology alumnus himself, Albert's journey from our Aerospace Engineering faculty to leading a significant part of Vestas' strategy was nothing short of inspirational. 💼 His talk provided a deep dive into the intricacies of the offshore market and how Vestas continues to be at the forefront of wind energy innovation, and the search for innovation and standardization. Next week Mark van Spronsen and I will be going into the Open Jet Facility of the TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering to obtain aerodynamic validation data. This will be the first (ever?!?) wind tunnel experiment of a rigidized Leading-Edge Inflatable kite, the technical name of the conventional kite-surf kite, and deployed to harvest wind energy by Airborne Wind Energy companies like Kitepower. My PhD goal is to develop a simulation model to aid in the kite design process (first paper: https://lnkd.in/emtsAz9A). Before deploying such a model, performing experiments is crucial to ensure that the model accurately represents reality. Therefore, we will measure the aerodynamic forces next week. In the second week, we will infuse particles into the flow and illuminate them with a laser to take pictures; this is an optical flow measurement technique called Particle Image Velocimetry. Curve Works delivered the rigidized carbon-fiber kite scale model during my 10,000th day as a human, the perfect anniversary gift! The scale model looks amazing. Thanks, Sebastiaan Lindstedt and Francois Geuskens, for developing such a beautiful kite. With the help of colleague Fabien Schmutz from the space department, we measured the shape using a FARO Technologies laser tracker system. This enables us to quantify the innate (albeit small) differences arising from a manufacturing process. Knowing the differences between the design CAD shape and the exact shape upfront will increase the accuracy of the measurement.
