CMIP ─ Coupled Model Intercomparison Project
Research Services
CMIP, bridging science and policy to meet the climate change challenge.
About us
The modelling of the Earth’s climate is executed by a range of institutes all over the globe. The Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) coordinates these efforts to improve the overall quality and reliability of the model outputs with the objective to understand past, present and future climate changes. The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) launched the CMIP modelling project in 1995 and since then it has grown from a scientific research initiative to become a global enterprise: more than 50 modelling centres around the world have participated in the sixth phase of CMIP, CMIP6, which has highly contributed to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report. This collaborative structure has now expanded to a point where coordination of its elements requires dedicated secretariat support resulting in the establishment of the CMIP International Project Office (CMIP-IPO), hosted by the European Space Agency (ESA) at its European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT).

🌍 CMIP variables: call to authors open now! 🌍 The #CMIP Data Request Task Team are seeking to work with community representative leads and engage with the wider community to devise a controlled list of high priority variables that facilitate the majority of user needs, while keeping the request as small as possible. Papers across five identified themes will define a collection of harmonised variables to support the high impact analysis of climate model output, and provide a consistent and robust set of parameters on which to build the #CMIP7 archive. Each will be a collaboration between the CMIP Data Request Task Team and the #MIPs and communities relevant to each theme. The CMIP6 #DataRequest enabled the creation of a comprehensive and coherent database which supported and continues to support a global research and assessment effort. The CMIP7 Data Request aims to build on the successes of CMIP6, address many issues raised, particularly around easing bottlenecks and enhancing transparency, and adapt to the changing context set by plans for CMIP7 as a whole. Themes A consistent list of variables will be developed across five thematic areas: - Atmosphere (call open, deadline 8 March): https://lnkd.in/dgfH9vsC - Earth system (call open, deadline 8 March): https://lnkd.in/dUknh9zf - Impacts & adaptation (call closed): https://lnkd.in/dzAXa5PT - Land & land-ice (call open, deadline 8 March): https://lnkd.in/dZgtn6MY - Ocean & sea-ice (call open, deadline 1 March): https://lnkd.in/dwuFRs-M #ClimateModelling #ClimateVariables #OpenCall #ClimateData
