This week Boris Johnson outlined plans for an #offshorewind revolution that would ensure that every home in Britain is powered by renewable energy by 2030. This bold policy would position the UK as a world leader for offshore wind and contribute significant to the target of #netzero emissions by 2050. The policy of investing in renewable energy, and more specifically offshore wind, is popular throughout the UK and this creates the foundation for developers to build advocacy for their projects. However with such a wealth of support for the investment in renewable energy, it could be questioned whether Boris Johnson’s plans are bold enough? The Prime Minister made a clear distinction between onshore and offshore wind, however it could be argued that the onshore wind industry should receive a similar level of support and backing. What is clear is that if the UK is to reach net zero emissions by 2050, then we will need a succession of ambitious and world leading policies such as these.

Great session with Copper Consultancy on infrastructure with representatives from across transport. Thank you to everyone who took part in our discussion which included road maintenance, the transition to low carbon vehicles and long term infrastructure investment. Loads of advice along with the key questions on how The Labour Party will address the many challenges we face if we form the next government. Labour is committed to economic stability, to long term policy and regulatory certainty and to rebuilding investor confidence. Our mission for government will get Britain Building Again, Generate Cheap, Clean Energy and create Opportunities across the country. We have many challenges. Supporting rail freight to reduce the congestion on our roads. Repairing the potholes and addressing the 11 year backlog. Speeding up planning and grid connections and allocating the Rapid Charge Fund to support the roll out of ev charge points to rebuild consumer confidence in the switch to electric. Rebuilding local government capacity. These all depend on government working closely with business. Labour will have industrial and automotive strategies which will have partnership at their heart. Over the summer I will be bringing infrastructure and automotive manufacturers together to address the challenges of repairing our roads and rebuilding consumer confidence in going electric. The brilliant people at today's event and many more besides are going to be key to meeting the challenges of our age. I encourage everyone who attended today to keep in touch and help identify the solutions to the problems which we face. 🛤️ On 11th April, Ella Sanders (She/Her) and Owen Bell attended the Rail Forum event, Stations: Building today for tomorrow, to learn from rail industry leaders on how to improve stations, boost passenger numbers and improve inclusivity. The event coincided with Copper’s forthcoming report on rail stations in the UK, which polled the public on what their priorities are for their local train station. In a day of interesting presentations and engaging discussions, we learnt: 🚉 The rail industry believes that understanding community needs is key to improving stations 🚉 Stations need to be reorientated away from traditional commuter use, and towards a world where off-peak and leisure travel is more prevalent 🚉 Station operators need to work with businesses and Network Rail to deliver effective improvements to stations which will have a lasting impact 🚉 Network Rail is working with station operators to make stations more accessible to those with disabilities and neurodiverse people. “Uniting and levelling up across the UK [is] the greatest project that any government can embark on,” said Boris Johnson when he promoted his Party’s flagship policy at the 2021 Conservative Conference. But has it worked out like that? Reports last month stated that Levelling Up has not had the desired impact. Many projects are yet to start, many targets are set to be missed. Yesterday, Copper’s Sean R. attended Energy Systems Catapult's Innovating to NetZero 2024 event in Birmingham. Coinciding with the launch of Catapult’s Innovating to Net Zero report, the event was an opportunity to see the latest modelling, evidence and analysis on the costs and benefits of different technologies, system designs, and carbon reduction pathways to achieving Net Zero by 2050. In a day of fascinating talks, panels and interviews, we learned: 🟢 The cost of Net Zero doesn't have to have a negative impact on the economy and can be limited to just 1% of GDP 🟢 Upgrading energy infrastructure is pivotal and we need to invest in it now 🟢 Electricity generation needs to double, and there could be a big role for hydrogen – particularly in the marine, aviation and heavy goods transport sectors and in energy-intensive industries. 🟢 There'll be no Net Zero without carbon capture. 🟢 Success depends on innovation across the whole sector, from new technology to changing behaviours. While there is no doubt that those in the room and in the energy sector are fully committed to this transition, it’s clear there is a need to engage individuals, households and communities in how this future might look for them, and their buy-in will be crucial to the success, or not, of net zero. #NetZero #Energy #Renewables #CarbonCapture #Hydrogen #Communication #InnovatingToNetZero2024
