Introducing ‘Harvesting Carbon – Pioneering a pay-for-impact model for carbon mitigation and adaptation in coffee’ We are excited to unveil another full project from the latest DGBP round, led by Solidaridad Network Nederlands, in partnership with Louis Dreyfus Company Suisse, Fondazione Giuseppe e Pericle Lavazza Onlus, Merrild Kaffe ApS, and Solidaridad Eastern and Central Africa Expertise. 🌿 This innovative project in Uganda will introduce the first-ever ‘pay-for-impact’ model in the coffee-industry. By producing and trading carbon ‘impact units’ alongside coffee, it introduces a scalable market-based approach to environmental sustainability. The project will support 4,500 farmers, including men, women, and youth, in transitioning to low-carbon, regenerative agriculture, and climate-smart practices, while monitoring carbon emissions at the coffee farm level. 💼 Focused on enhancing farmer livelihoods, this project will elevate incomes and improve living standards. It will enable a meaningful transfer of knowledge and skills from global institutions to Ugandan farmers, strengthen access to international markets, and diversify income streams. 🌍 Beyond income improvements, the project focuses on innovative and sustainable management of forests and farmlands, aiming to reduce deforestation and biodiversity loss. Food Sovereignty and Resilience... A Community's Tale of Sustainable Living Nearly 2.3 billion people globally lack access to adequate food, warns the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its 2023 report. This reality highlights the immense challenge of achieving food security, especially in the face of #climatechange, conflict, and economic instability. But amidst this daunting backdrop, hope shines brightly from Salama in Makueni, Kenya. A community there resists devastating challenges like food shortages, thriving through resilience and #sustainability. They embody the 2023 Global Assessment Report's message from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC): "Building resilience is crucial for adapting to climate change and mitigating its impacts." They have achieved abundance by establishing a system that relies on reverence for their surroundings instead of external sources to meet their basic needs. Their achievement follows a Feedback to the Future program, which provides circular and regenerative innovations like #regenerativeagriculture, #naturalbuilding, #wastemanagement, and sustainable energy. They practice: 🏘The use of local materials to build homes, avoiding harmful tilling practices, and enriching the soil through composting, mimicking natural processes to increase the land's resilience. 🍒 Diverse crop farming, including fruit trees, provides them with year-round harvests and maximum nutritional value, ensuring #foodsecurity and protecting against crop failures. 🌞 Their #solarpower use reduces fossil fuel dependence. Instead of felling trees, tree trimmings are used where charcoal is unavoidable. ♻ Surplus food is preserved through solar drying, and farm waste is composted to return nutrients to the soil while minimizing waste. Isaac Mwololo illustrates his community's spirit. Beaming in his teeming #foodforest, he says, "We can comfortably live without money here." His words resonate not in literal monetary independence but in their resourcefulness and #resilience. The community, sadly, faces #waterscarcity and has dug several water pans with the help of Feedback to the Future, but more are needed. Thiong'o Gachie, the program's Regenerative Agriculture Trainer and Director, emphasizes that increased access to water would significantly enhance the community's #foodsovereignty and resilience. cc: Peter Ochuka Media: Wambui Mbuthia
