Moving towards better mental health: Mind’s Physical Activity Impact Report 2018-2021

Between 2018 and 2021, Sport England and the National Lottery funded us to deliver two physical activity programmes. Moving towards better mental health showcases what we’ve achieved through our Get Set to Go  (Phase 2) and Sector Support programmes in the last three years, and celebrates the amazing people and organisations who made them a success.

Full impact report

The full report has been developed by pulling together Loughborough University’s evaluation of the Sector Support programme alongside our own Get Set to Go evaluation.

It includes an overview of each programme, their impact, how the coronavirus pandemic affected our work, case studies, what we learned and recommendations. The recommendations have been created to help anyone to support people living with mental health problems to be physical active.

Get Set to Go

Between 2018-2021, local Minds and 348 volunteers delivered the programme to 5,842 people. Funds raised from our On Your Side partnership with the English Football League (EFL) enabled us to increase the number of local Minds delivering Get Set to Go to 19.

65% of people involved in the programme said their activity levels increased and 61% of participants saw an improvement in their quality of life scores.

“The sport really changed my life in so many ways mentally and physically. I have lost weight and also reduced my blood sugar to a safer level” Get Set to Go participant.

Sector Support

In 2018, we created our Sector Support programme. It aimed to increase the number of sport and physical activity providers equipped with the skills to support and engage people with mental health problems in physical activity.

During 2018 to 2021, we directly supported nearly 260,000 people working or volunteering in the sport and physical activity sector. We estimate they will work with or support at least 5.6 million people.

Loughborough University evaluated the Sector Support programme and said “it was effective in initiating conversations around promoting parity of esteem between physical and mental health in the sport and physical activity sector”.
