About the Project
Background:
Our public outdoor spaces also provide opportunities to be active, connect with others, be creative and interact with nature, improving physical and mental well-being. Having the opportunity to play in natural environments helps children develop social skills, language and comprehension. These spaces are also incredibly important for wildlife and for providing services such as storing carbon, slowing the flow of rainwater and providing green lungs in our urban areas.
The Project
Monmouthshire County Council has been awarded Local Places for Nature funding by Welsh Government to build upon the success of the Community Nature Spaces pilot in Monmouth and Chepstow to deliver a similar scheme in Abergavenny. The project aims to target green transformation of Green Spaces that will benefit from better grassland management and enhancements for nature to create mini havens for wildlife, providing habitat for pollinators and urban wildlife. But they will not only benefit wildlife; Community Nature Spaces will also provide residents with opportunities for wild play, community growing areas and places for quiet reflection.
Community Nature Spaces could include:
- Community food growing spaces
- fruit trees/community orchards
- mini meadows and native hedgerows
- flower-rich meadows mounds and slopes
- Planting for pollinators and other wildlife
- Tree and shrub planting

Design Plans
Residents, businesses, and community groups are encouraged to visit the Community Nature Spaces webpage to view the designs and share their feedback by January 19th, 2024. The council aims to continue managing and improving green spaces beyond this project and welcomes ideas about areas in your communities that you feel could be considered as part of future plans.
