We're launching a revolution! Care to join us?

Join us for this two-day conference which will explore the need for a revolution in how we care for people experiencing death, dying and bereavement.

Dying is changing; people are dying over longer periods of time, with ever more complex conditions. The Isle of Wight is experiencing this change faster than most and Mountbatten is already working at pace to find innovative solutions to these challenges and increasing demand for services.

Our conference will share ideas on transforming services to meet growing demand and ways hospices and healthcare professionals can influence the way our communities approach death and dying.

High profile keynote speakers will include Tracey Bleakley, Chief Executive of Hospice UK, Dame Barbara Monroe, past CEO of St Christopher's Hospice and Trustee Marie Curie, Nigel Hartley, CEO of Mountbatten Isle of Wight and Countess Mountbatten in Southampton and Barbara Gale, CEO of St Nicholas Hospice Care.

Adam Kay, author of the best-selling ‘This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor’ is set to open this year’s Mountbatten Annual Conference.  The funnyman and former medic is set to entertain around 200 delegates at the start of the two-day event, which is being held in the grand setting of Northwood House in Cowes.

Nigel Hartley, Mountbatten’s Chief Executive, who will also appear as a keynote speaker, said: “We are really pleased that Adam has agreed to perform for our delegates. His book is so hugely popular that we hope many will be inspired to come along and hear some of his many anecdotes relayed in real life!

“I am sure Adam’s appearance will be a great opener for our conference which is set to explore some really challenging themes for our sector. Mountbatten believes that no-one should die without the highly specialised, expert end of life care which is part of what Mountbatten offers. Together we will explore how hospices can survive and grow in the current climate and we will invite our delegates to join our revolution, making a stand for the very best care for people who are dying, whoever they are and however they have lived their lives,” Nigel concluded.

Picador approached Adam about turning his live show 'Fingering A Minor On the Piano' - Adam’s darkly humorous re-imaginings of modern day pop and rock classics with a deeply confessional look back on his former life as an obstetrician and gynecologist, into a book, to detail his experiences, and so his first tome was born; 'This Is Going To Hurt', which was published in 2017. Welcome to the life of a junior doctor: 97-hour weeks, life and death decisions, a constant tsunami of bodily fluids, and the hospital parking meter earns more than you. Scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights and missed weekends, Adam Kay's This is Going to Hurt provides a no-holds-barred account of his time on the NHS front line. Hilarious, horrifying and heartbreaking, this diary is everything you wanted to know – and more than a few things you didn't – about life on and off the hospital ward.
