Premodern Experience of the Natural World in Translation

The conference will explore the different ways in which experience of the natural world was conveyed through translations in late medieval and early modern Arabic, Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, Chinese and vernacular thought, practices, and artefacts. Translation and transmission processes of experience of the natural world affected some key characteristics of experience. The conference topic is divided into three rubrics: Concepts, Toolkits, and Layouts. In Concepts, we will examine how and why premodern experience of the natural world is epistemically transformed, transposed, and rearranged through linguistic transfer processes. In Toolkits, we will study how the experiences of the premodern translators re-shaped and reconfigured experiences of the natural world in translation from the source texts, images, and materialities to the target domains. In Layouts, we will spotlight acts of translation that involve transformations of the layout and media in or by which premodern experiences of the natural world are represented, consumed, and reproduced.
