The Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications has appointed Terence O'Rourke as the new chairperson designate of the ESB.

Mr O’Rourke is a former managing partner at KPMG and chairman of Enterprise Ireland.

He is also on the boards of Hibernia Reit, Kinsale Capital Management and the Irish Times.

He will remain in the position for five years.

"The Programme for Government commits us to reducing our overall greenhouse gas emissions by more than half by the end of this decade and ESB will play an important role in helping the country reach that goal," said Eamon Ryan.

"I look forward to working with Mr. O’Rourke as the ESB continues to take  a leadership role in addressing the decarbonisation challenge and meeting our climate targets."

Mr O’Rourke will replace Ellvena Graham whose term in the role ended in July.

Eamon Ryan said she had played a significant role in the roll out of SMART meters, electric vehicle infrastructure and decarbonisation of the sector.
