What is the Week of Action?

Our Week of Action is our key campaigning moment every year; the week is focused on campaigns and education around a core issue relating to refugee rights. Last year was 'End the Legal Lottery', and this year, with 'Shifting the Spotlight', we're focusing on raising awareness of the contexts and situations that refugees are forced to flee from and to all over the world, going beyond the media headlines and sharing information that is often much more difficult to access.

What's on?

Asmara to Athens

Sponsored challenge - cover 2928km as a team

Asmara is the capital city of Eritrea. Eritrea is a dictatorship with some of the worst human rights conditions in the world, and those fleeing Eritrea are most often escaping forced conscription, including of children. This year, we want to shine a light on the human rights violations taking place in Eritrea, and the long and dangerous journeys that Eritreans have to take in order to reach safety.

The journey between Asmara and Athens is 2,928km. Between the 13th and 19th February, those who take on the challenge are going to collectively cover that distance!

We’ll ask you to contribute as much distance as you can during that week – whether that just means including your walk into uni, or if you’d like to do something a little more intensive! Any way of covering distance counts: walking, running, swimming, cycling, rowing, and so on. By travelling this distance, we invite you to stand in solidarity with refugees and displaced persons worldwide, and to raise money to support vital psychological and legal aid. We’ll ask you to help us by sharing our fundraising page for this challenge far and wide, so we can make the biggest collective impact possible!

Join us at St Edmund Hall College, Oxford on Sat 18th Feb for a panel discussion exploring the intersection between LGBTQIA+ identities and experiences of forced migration. We'll be joined by panellists from a variety of NGOs supporting LGBTQIA+ migrants in the UK, who'll be exploring topics ranging from discrimination within the asylum system and legal frameworks to support LGBTQIA+ forced migrants, to homonationalism.

The ticket price of £2.50 covers a glass of Prosecco at the drinks reception which will follow the panel talk. Since this is an educational event which we want to make accessible to all, please do email us (beth@solidaritee.org.uk) or message the SolidariTee Oxford fb page for a free ticket. You can also opt to add a donation to SolidariTee onto the price of your ticket, or a t-shirt (all proceeds go directly to funding NGOs providing legal and psychological aid for refugees and asylum seekers in Greece). We'll also be selling SolidariTees at the event!
