Participant Information

We are inviting you to take part in a study being carried out by ACE Support Hub, Public Health Wales. Please read the information below before deciding if you would like to take part or not, if you have any questions, please contact the research team.

Background

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are stressful experiences occurring during childhood that hurt a child, for example maltreatment, or affect them through the environment in which they live, for example growing up in a house with domestic violence. Tackling ACEs has been a priority of the Welsh Government in part through a successful campaign to raise awareness of what ACEs are. The next phase is to focus on ‘what works’ and support the development of effective practice.

Why are we doing this study?

The aim of this research project is to identify effective interventions relating to the prevention of ACEs or childhood adversity more broadly. We are keen to hear about projects or programmes that are based within Welsh communities that aim to prevent or address childhood adversity or the impact of childhood adversity, for example by working with children, young people or parents or providing other support to members of the community. If you are involved in a project like this, we would like to hear from you.

Do I have to take part?

Participation in this study is voluntary so it is up to you if you would like to take part. If you complete the survey and then change your mind, you can contact the research team to remove your information and it will not be used in the findings. If you partially complete the survey, this information may still be used unless you request that it is removed.

If you would like to take part, please continue with the online survey; alternatively, if you would prefer to complete the survey by a telephone interview, please contact the research team.

What will happen if I agree to take part?

In order to complete the survey, we need your consent. Next you will be directed to the survey which focusses on information about the community project that you are involved in. You will need to work your way through the survey, answering the questions. Most of the questions will require you to type into the text boxes. The survey should take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Once you have completed the survey you will be asked if you would be interested in discussing the project in more detail with a researcher, you will be able to answer yes or no to this question, if you agree to be contacted, you will be asked to provide your contact details (an email or a contact number).

What will happen to my data?

The survey data will be downloaded from the website onto Public Health Wales password protected computers so that the research team can analyse it. The data will be kept for 5 years. The data will be used to inform policy and practice through briefings, reports and presentations to the Welsh Government and other stakeholders. The data may also be published in a journal.
