MAIM

Dar a thig an t-uisge gu grad, dè chailleas sinn?

When the water comes suddenly, what do we lose?

MAIM, meaning panic in Gàidhlig, is a call to action, giving voice to the frustrations of the next generation who care deeply about the crisis facing their land and language.

This unique collaboration between Theatre Gu Leòr and the band WHɎTE was inspired by exquisite tracks from their latest album, Tairm, and will feature live music, dance, spoken word and video.

The piece was developed with award-winning choreographer Jessica Kennedy from Junk Ensemble, by Theatre Gu Leòr and WHYTE in association with the Tron Theatre, with integrated British Sign Language interpretation in each show.

As covid-19 put a stop to the MAIM tour in March 2020, we’ve been developing the project in different ways, through commissioning a new album by WHɎTE (MAIM, March 2021) and a new collection of writing by Alasdair MacIlleBhàin with artwork by Alice NicBhatair. Both the album and the book develop the themes from MAIM.

REVIEWS

★★★★ “An unforgettable combination of song, imagery and movement; delivered by four fine performers” - The Scotsman

★★★★ "A fascinating live collage of music, word and movement....a bubbling hybrid that is part elegy, part call to arms” - The Herald

★★★★ “A unique hybrid that works its spell slowly, exerting an increasingly powerful pull... the show’s accumulative effect is startling” - The Times

★★★★ “Determined and meaningful, while atmospheric and captivating, MAIM is a show with refreshing creativity and pertinent importance to Scotland's cultural climate” - The List

“Powerful, eclectic and satisfying…more of this please” - Exeunt Magazine

“Mholainn do dhuine sam bith a dhol gu MAIM ma gheibh sibh cothrom. Tha e ùr-ghnàthach, ealanta, cumhachdach le teachdaireachd làidir mun Ghàidhlig agus mun àrainneachd. Bha e sònraichte math - Feasgar, BBC Radio nan Gàidheal

Audience feedback

“Abair gun robh e math. Cumhachdach, pearsanta, is a' togail nan ceanglaichean eadar daoine, tìr, cànan, is linntean. Faicibh e.”

“A fantastic production about language, land and culture - and their destruction... Go see it!!”

“Uabhasach math fhaicinn BSL ann an àite aig cridhe a' phìos--cha tric gum bi ruigsinneachd sa phrìomh àite ealain sam bith. Na caillibh cothrom seo fhaicinn.”

“The team put BSL at the heart of this with Gàidhlig, and it was such a pleasure to see. Accessibility is so often an afterthought—Maim does an excellent job of what it can look like to include by default what usually has to be fought for.”

“Moved and inspired by MAIM tonight […] an exciting new performance”

“beautifully poetic piece exploring cultural extinction & changing landscapes - bravo”
