New guidelines for the treatment of young people with gender identity issues are to be drawn up by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

The college, which sets professional standards, said that it was talking to paediatric specialists about producing its first guide to such treatment to deal with a rising number of cases and controversies.

The college said that local child mental health services needed to improve how they dealt with young people questioning their gender identity as not all of them required specialist care. It said that there was “no blanket approach” to tackling children’s gender identity.
