Nicola Sturgeon has been accused of misleading the Scottish parliament with a story that is “full of holes” after claiming she forgot about a meeting in which harassment complaints against Alex Salmond were raised.

The first minister has now admitted talks took place in her Holyrood office with Geoff Aberdein, Mr Salmond’s former chief of staff, during which she was told Mr Salmond wanted to see her “urgently about a serious matter”.

In a written submission to a Holyrood committee set up to examine her government’s botched investigation into complaints against Mr Salmond — and her own conduct — Ms Sturgeon said she believed the meeting on March 29, 2018, had covered “the suggestion that the matter might relate to allegations of a sexual nature”.
