More than a million acres of trees will be planted in England by 2050 under legally binding environmental targets proposed by the government.

The proportion of land covered by trees would rise from 14.5 per cent to 17.5 per cent by 2050, meaning an additional area larger than the size of Kent would be planted.

Ministers have also pledged to halt the decline in wildlife populations by 2030 and then increase them by 10 per cent on the 2030 level by 2042.

However, wildlife groups warned that this could result in less wildlife by 2042 than there is now because populations are currently declining by about 2 per cent a year.

Other targets proposed for consultation include cutting nitrogen and phosphorus pollution from farming, which
