In a modern economy the cost of accidents in terms of injury to workers and productivity to employers is high. Health and safety systems are implemented to reduce the incidence of accidents and unsafe practices. Behaviour Based Safety targets changes in worker behaviour as a means of preventing occupational injuries and illnesses.

This module will provide an understanding of the principles and application of behaviour-based safety in the context of more effectively managing workplace health and safety.

An overview of the

  • principles, techniques, and approaches involved in developing, implementing, and maintaining a behavioural safety process within an organisation.
  • behavioural safety leadership.
  • workgroup focused approaches.
  • peer-to-peer focused approaches.
  • performance indicators - behaviour change indicators, process indicators, follow-up indicators.

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

  • describe the underpinning principles and key attributes of an effective behavioural safety process,
  • apply the relevant principles, approaches, and performance indicators to oversee the development of a behavioural safety process within an organization,
  • apply current best practice techniques to oversee the implementation and maintenance of an effective behavioural safety process within an organisation.
  • defend the merits (in terms of the lower accident rates and increased productivity) associated with the sustained implementation of a behavioural based safety process within an organisation, which facilitates practitioners in linking the root causes of accidents to their unwanted/unsafe precursor behaviours and explain the importance of an organisation leadership's commitment to the sustained success of a behavioural safety initiative.

Applicants are normally expected to hold an NFQ level 8 primary honours degree (minimum H2.2), or equivalent and have at least 3 years of relevant industrial experience.

Entry requirements are established to ensure the learner can engage with the course material and assessments, at a level suitable to their needs, and the academic requirements of the module. By applying to this micro-credential, you are confirming that you have reviewed and understand any such requirements, and that you meet the eligibility criteria for admission.

Successful completion of this module does not automatically qualify you for entry into a further award. All programme applicants must meet the entry requirements listed if applying for a further award.

The fees for this programme are €1,000.
