The Digital Economy, which overlaps area such as ‘tech’, digital disruption, ICT and telecoms, offers a tremendous opportunity for the Western Cape in the economic response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The first four months of 2020 have demonstrated that, when needed, local companies can rapidly pivot to new digital-centric ways of working and it can be reasonably expected that these changes are irreversible.

Digital adoption is important as the benefits of digital technologies filter through the economy.  For businesses, the internet promotes inclusion of firms in the world economy by expanding trade, raising the productivity of capital, and intensifying competition in the marketplace, which in turn induces innovation.  It brings opportunities to households by creating new kinds of jobs, re-skilling and upskilling the workforce, leveraging human capital.  It enables citizens to access public services, strengthens government capability, and serves as a platform for citizens to tackle collective action problems.

Many businesses have never properly tapped into the power of digital technologies and were unfortunately caught off unprepared when this global crisis hit. As we implement a risk-adjusted approach to opening up the economy  nationally, we will find that online and digital-enabled mechanisms will be key to the easing of the lockdown and getting more people participating in the economy again.

The GoDigital initiative is an effort to support small business in moving their business into the digital age, adopting digital technologies and business practices and providing businesses with practical tips tool and information on doing so - both during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.

GoDigital Western Cape is split into these 4 intiatives:
