Children who want to transition will be able to wear the school uniform of either sex under government guidance.

The advice, which will be published in the next fortnight, will state that children are allowed to “socially transition” to their preferred gender identity if there is parental consent.

It will allow children to change their names and pronouns and to wear the uniform of their choosing, with decisions being taken school by school.

Schools will be told to bar children from using lavatories or changing facilities of the opposite sex. It is expected to point to exemptions in the equality act that allow schools to provide “same-sex services” as long as they are “objectively justifiable”.
