DUT’S VICE-CHANCELLOR AND PRINCIPAL PROF THANDWA MTHEMBU SALUTES THE DUT COVID-19 RESPONSE TEAM FOR “FIXING THE PROBLEM AND NOT FIXING THE BLAME”

The Durban University of Technology’s (DUT’s) Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor Thandwa Mthembu has taken his time to salute DUT’s COVID-19 Response Team for their dedication and hard work in fighting the spread of COVID-19 at the University.

GOLDEN KEY DUT CHAPTER PAMPER CHILDREN LIVING WITH DISABILITIES ON MANDELA DAY

The Golden Key International Honour Society South Africa (GK SA) DUT Chapter decided to show some love to the children living with disabilities at the Sparks Estate Cheshire Home in Sydenham, Durban in commemoration of Mandela Day on Saturday, 18 July 2020.

GK SA DUT Chapter Advisor, Ayanda Mthethwa said due to the COVID-19 restrictions they dropped off a scrumptious lunch and goodie bags at the Home to offer their love and support to these children with severe mental and physical disabilities.

She said they would have loved to spend their 67 minutes in celebration of Nelson Mandela’s legacy at the Home, interacting with the children but had to adhere to the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions and not put anyone’s life at risk.

DUT HOSTS TWO-HOUR COVID-19 WEBINAR

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) hosted a two-hour webinar on COVID-19: Time for New Visions About the Meaning of Politics, Democracy and Mass Resistance on Microsoft Teams on Monday, 20 July 2020.

This webinar which was attended by distinguished guests was facilitated by DUT’s Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Management and Economics, Dr Strini Pillay.

The main speakers were the famous author, Professor Vijay Prashad, political activist, Mphutlane Wa Bofelo and Amsterdam based writer, Simone Zeefuik.

Prof Prashad is the Executive-Director of Tricontinental Institute for Social Research and the Chief Editor of LeftWord Books. He is also the author of thirty books and is a former professor of International Studies at Trinity College, Connecticut.

DUT CELEBRATES THE 2020 WORLD YOUTH SKILLS DAY #WYSD2020

The Durban University of Technology (DUT) in collaboration with five campuses of the Umngungundlovu Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College joined the entire globe in celebrating the 2020 World Youth Skills Day #(WYSD2020) under the UNESCO-UNEVOC theme “Skills for a Resilient Youth in the Era of Covid19 and Beyond” on 15 July.

 The world youth skills day aims to recognize the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work, and entrepreneurship and to highlight the crucial role of skilled youth in addressing current and future global challenges.

THE PASSING OF DR ANDREW MLANGENI

The Durban University of Technology is extremely sad to learn that struggle stalwart, liberation fighter and former Member of Parliament, Dr Andrew Mekete Mlangeni, has passed on. We convey our most sincere condolences to his family, friends and comrades.

Dr Mlangeni was a DUT Alumnus. He was conferred with an honorary Doctorate of Education from our Faculty of Arts and Design in April 2018. The ceremony was held in the FJ Sithole Hall on the Indumiso campus in Pietermaritzburg. The Executive Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Design, Dr Rene Smith said: “The Faculty of Arts and Design mourns the passing of uBaba Mlangeni. He lived a life of purpose, committed to ideals which he stayed true to – until the end. To honour his legacy, we must imbibe the values which he lived and fought for.
